Vinayaka Chaturthi, also known as Ganesh Chaturthi, is a prominent Hindu festival celebrated in honor of the elephant-headed god, Lord Ganesha. It marks the birthday of Ganesha and is observed with great devotion across India, especially in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Goa, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.
The origins of the festival are not clear, but it has been publicly celebrated since the times of Maratha ruler Shivaji. However, its widespread practice was popularized by Indian freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak in the late 19th century to promote cultural nationalism and to bridge the gap between Brahmins and non-Brahmins.
During this festive time, streets buzz with activity as people visit pandals to pay their respects. Homes are decorated with flowers and lights. Community feasts are also common where people share meals irrespective of their social strata.
