Guru Ravidas Jayanti in India

Guru Ravidas Jayanti marks the birthday of Guru Ravidas, a prominent North Indian saint and poet of the Bhakti movement during the 15th to 16th century CE. He is revered for his contributions to devotional music and poetry, and for his role in advocating equality, social justice, and human rights.

History and Significance

Guru Ravidas was born in Varanasi into a family that belonged to the leather-working Chamar caste, considered untouchable at the time. Despite facing social discrimination, he rose to prominence through his spiritual teachings that emphasized the importance of devotion to God rather than caste or creed. His verses are included in the Sikh scriptures, Guru Granth Sahib.

Traditions

  • Religious Gatherings: Devotees attend special satsangs (religious gatherings) where they sing hymns from Guru Granth Sahib.
  • Processions: In various regions, processions called 'Nagar Kirtans' are organized where people sing devotional songs.
  • Reading Scriptures: Followers read Amritbani Guru Ravidas Ji, containing hymns of his poetic works.
  • Community Meals: Langar (community kitchen) is organized at temples where food is served to all regardless of their background as a symbol of equality.

Activities on the Day

  • Devotees take holy dips in sacred rivers as it's believed that this act purifies their soul.
  • People donate food, clothes, and money to the needy as an act of charity.

This festival holds immense importance especially among the Dalit community in India and is also celebrated by many across different parts of South Asia. The day is observed by paying homage to Guru Ravidas's teachings against caste disparities and promoting unity within communities.
