Whit Monday, also known as Pentecost Monday, is a Christian holiday commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. It is celebrated on the day after Pentecost, which occurs 50 days after Easter.
In Hungary, as in many other countries with Christian traditions, Whit Monday was historically a day of religious significance. The day marks the conclusion of the Easter cycle and is considered the birthday of the Christian Church.
Traditionally in Hungary, Whit Monday was observed with various local customs and religious practices. One such tradition was "sprinkling" (locsolás), a form of fertility rite where men would sprinkle water or perfume on women. In return, women would give them painted eggs or treats.
Today, while some of these traditions have waned in popularity or transformed over time, many Hungarians still observe Whit Monday as a time for family gatherings and outdoor activities. It remains a public holiday in Hungary, so people often take advantage of the long weekend to travel or relax.
Religious Hungarians may attend church services to celebrate the significance of the Holy Spirit in Christian theology. However, as society has become more secularized, for many it's simply a day off work to enjoy leisure pursuits.
