Christmas Day in Hungary reflects a blend of Christian religious traditions and local Hungarian customs. The festive period starts with Advent, leading up to Christmas Eve (Szenteste), which plays a significant role, often considered more important than December 25th itself.
On Christmas Eve, families decorate the Christmas tree together, with traditional ornaments like small wooden figures, fruits, nuts wrapped in shiny foil, and szaloncukor (a traditional Hungarian candy hung on the tree). After the tree is adorned, many attend a midnight mass called "Éjféli Mise."
The main Christmas meal is traditionally eaten on Christmas Eve and includes fish soup, stuffed cabbage, and beigli (a poppy seed or walnut roll). Exchanging gifts also occurs on this evening; according to tradition, they are brought by Baby Jesus (Jézuska) or angels.
