Jean-Jacques Dessalines was a key figure in the fight for independence from French colonial rule. After years of conflict, he declared Haiti's sovereignty on January 1, 1804. As a Governor-General and later Emperor of Haiti, his reign was short-lived—he was assassinated on October 17, 1806.
