Statehood Day (Dan državnosti) is a national holiday in Croatia, celebrated on May 30th. It commemorates the day in 1990 when the first post-Communist multi-party Parliament was constituted. This event marked the beginning of the end of communist rule and paved the way for Croatia's independence from Yugoslavia.
The modern Statehood Day celebration has a complex history, reflecting Croatia's turbulent past. After the initial declaration in 1990, Croatian independence was formally declared on June 25, 1991. For many years, Independence Day on June 25th and Statehood Day on May 30th were observed separately.
However, the date of Statehood Day has shifted over time due to different interpretations and political decisions. From 2002 until 2019, it was celebrated on June 25th to mark the declaration of independence from Yugoslavia. In 2020, the Croatian Parliament decided to revert to the original date of May 30th to emphasize the establishment of democratic institutions.
