Third Day of Lunar New Year in Hong Kong

History and Traditions:

The third day of the Lunar New Year, known as Chek Lap (赤口), is traditionally considered an inauspicious day. According to Chinese folklore, it is a day when the god of anger, Kwan Yu, roams the earth, hence people are advised to avoid arguments or weddings. The origins of this belief are rooted in ancient times and have been observed for generations.

Activities on the Day:

Despite its reputation, many in Hong Kong have transformed it into a day of relaxation and joy. Here are some common activities:

  • Choi Sun Ning (Visiting the God of Wealth): People visit temples to pray for good fortune and wealth from Caishen (the God of Wealth). It's believed that meeting the God of Wealth on this day brings prosperity.

  • Hiking: To avoid conflict and bad luck associated with staying indoors, many opt to go hiking or engage in outdoor activities.

  • Hanging out with Friends: Since it's not ideal to visit family due to potential disagreements on this day, friends often gather instead for meals or entertainment.

  • Throwing Oranges into Water: Some believe that throwing oranges into the sea can help ward off bad luck.

Business Practices:

Most businesses remain closed during the first few days of the Lunar New Year in Hong Kong, including the third day. This gives employees time to observe traditions and spend time with family and friends.
