Chung Yeung Festival in Hong Kong

Date:

Chung Yeung Festival, also known as the Double Ninth Festival, is celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. In Hong Kong, it is recognized as a public holiday.

History:

The festival has roots in ancient China and is based on the Han dynasty tale of Huan Jing. Legend has it that Huan Jing was warned by a soothsayer to take his family to high ground on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month to escape disaster. Upon returning, they found their village devastated. This story led to the tradition of ascending heights to avoid evil and seek good fortune.

Traditions:

  • Hiking: Following tradition, people in Hong Kong hike up hills and mountains, as it is believed that this will bring good luck and prevent misfortune.
  • Paying Respects to Ancestors: Many visit ancestors’ graves to clean them and present offerings such as food and incense.
  • Flying Kites: Kite-flying is popular during this festival, with some believing that it helps ward off evil spirits.
  • Eating Special Foods: A common food associated with this festival is the 'Chung Yeung cake', which has a top layer sprinkled with seeds symbolizing fertility.

On Chung Yeung Festival, families spend time together enjoying outdoor activities and honoring their ancestors, keeping alive traditions that have been passed down for generations.
