Heroes Day in Guinea-Bissau is observed annually on August 3rd. This national holiday serves to commemorate the heroes who fought for the country's independence from Portuguese colonial rule. The day specifically honors those who lost their lives during the liberation struggle, including Amílcar Cabral, a prominent leader and one of the founding fathers of Guinea-Bissau’s independence movement.
The struggle for independence in Guinea-Bissau was spearheaded by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), led by Amílcar Cabral. The armed conflict began in the 1960s and continued until September 24, 1973, when independence was unilaterally declared. Official recognition from Portugal came following the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974.
