Valentine's Day in Greece
Valentine's Day, or "Agios Valentinus" as it is sometimes referred to in Greece, is celebrated on February 14th. Although not a traditional Greek holiday, it has been increasingly adopted from Western customs and is now a day where love and romance are celebrated across the country.
History
The celebration of love on February 14th is linked to the Christian martyr St. Valentine.
The holiday became associated with romantic love in the 14th century within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer when courtly love flourished.
Over time, Valentine’s Day spread to various parts of the world, including Greece, although it only gained popularity there in recent decades.
Traditions
In Greece, Valentine's Day traditions have been influenced by global trends and are less connected to any ancient Greek customs regarding love and relationships. Instead:
Couples exchange gifts such as flowers (especially red roses), chocolates, and jewelry.
Romantic dinners at restaurants are popular, with many establishments offering special menus for the occasion.
People also send cards declaring their affection, a practice borrowed from other countries.
Activities
Young people and couples may plan romantic getaways or surprise their partners with elaborate gestures.
Concerts, parties, and events themed around love might take place in various cities.
Some individuals celebrate friendships and familial love alongside or instead of romantic love.
While Valentine's Day is not rooted deeply in Greek culture or history, it has been embraced as an opportunity for expressing love and affection in contemporary Greek society.
