Ochi Day in Greece

Ochi Day, observed on October 28th each year, is a national holiday in Greece that commemorates the rejection by Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas of the ultimatum made by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini on October 28, 1940. The ultimatum demanded Greece allow Axis forces to enter Greek territory and occupy certain unspecified "strategic locations" or otherwise face war. Metaxas responded with a single word: "Ohi" (Όχι) which means "No" in Greek.

History:

  • Background: The event took place during World War II when Fascist Italy, under Mussolini's leadership, sought to expand its territory.
  • Greek Response: Metaxas's defiant response symbolizes Greek resistance against the Axis powers.
  • War Ensues: Following the refusal, Italian forces stationed in Albania, then an Italian protectorate, invaded Greece. The resulting Greco-Italian War lasted until Greece was occupied by German forces in April 1941.

Traditions:

  • Parades: Military and student parades take place in cities and towns throughout Greece.
  • Wreath-Laying Ceremonies: Officials lay wreaths at war memorials to honor those who fought against the Axis forces.

Activities on Ochi Day:

  • Public Celebrations: Greeks celebrate their national pride and wartime bravery with flags and banners.
  • School Events: Schools often hold special events or lessons focused on the historical significance of Ochi Day.
  • Closures: As a public holiday, government offices, businesses, and schools are typically closed.

Ochi Day is not only a remembrance of a pivotal moment in Greek history but also serves as an expression of national pride and unity for Greeks worldwide.
