Revolution Day in Gambia

Revolution Day in Gambia is observed on July 22 to commemorate the 1994 coup d'état that brought Yahya Jammeh to power. On this day in 1994, a group of young army officers led by Lieutenant Yahya Jammeh overthrew the government of President Dawda Jawara, who had led the country since its independence from British colonial rule in 1965.

History:

  • The coup was largely bloodless and met with little initial resistance.
  • Yahya Jammeh promised to root out corruption and bring about economic development.
  • He established the Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council (AFPRC) and later transitioned into a civilian government after winning presidential elections.

Traditions:

  • Under Jammeh's rule, Revolution Day was celebrated with much fanfare including military parades, speeches, and cultural performances.
  • It became a day for showcasing the regime's achievements and national developments.

Present-Day Observations: Since Yahya Jammeh's defeat in the December 2016 presidential election and subsequent exile in January 2017, the significance of Revolution Day has diminished. The current government led by President Adama Barrow does not officially celebrate this day as it represents a period of authoritarian rule. Public opinion on commemorating Revolution Day is divided due to the mixed legacy of Jammeh's 22-year rule.

Depending on political affiliations, some may remember the day quietly or use it as an opportunity to reflect on Gambia’s political history, while others may disregard it entirely. The current government focuses more on promoting reconciliation and human rights rather than celebrating the coup that brought Jammeh to power.
