Founders' Day in Ghana
Founders' Day in Ghana is a public holiday celebrated on August 4th to commemorate the contributions of all people who played significant roles in the struggle for the nation's independence. It particularly honors the members of the "Big Six" – Kwame Nkrumah, Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, and William Ofori Atta – who were pivotal figures in Ghana's fight against colonial rule.
History: The day was instituted by the government to recognize the efforts of these founding fathers. Previously, September 21st, which marks Kwame Nkrumah's birthday (the first Prime Minister and President of Ghana), was observed as Founders' Day. However, in 2019, the government shifted the focus to include all key players in the independence movement and set August 4th as the new date for Founders' Day. This date was chosen because it coincides with the formation of the Aborigines' Rights Protection Society in 1897 and the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in 1947, both instrumental movements towards independence.
Traditions: On Founders' Day, various activities are organized throughout Ghana:
What People Do: Ghanaians use this day to reflect on their past leaders’ courage and determination. Many visit national monuments dedicated to independence heroes or participate in community service projects. It is also a time for family gatherings where older generations share stories with younger ones to pass down history lessons.
