Carnival (First Day) in Grenada

Carnival in Grenada, known as Spicemas, is one of the most vibrant and anticipated events on the island. It traditionally occurs in August, culminating on the second Monday and Tuesday of the month. The first day of Carnival is a spectacular display of culture and celebration.

History and Traditions:

Grenada's Carnival has its roots in African, French, and British cultural practices. Initially connected with the Catholic tradition of celebrating before Lent, it has evolved into a celebration that also marks the end of slavery in the Caribbean.

One of the key traditions on the first day includes J'ouvert (pronounced "Jou-vay"), which starts before dawn. Participants cover themselves with oil, mud, and paint as they dance to calypso and soca music through the streets. This symbolizes throwing off the chains of slavery and is a display of freedom and festivity.

Another significant event on day one is the Pageant Mas or Traditional Mas. This involves costumed bands portraying characters from folklore such as Jab Jabs (devils), Short Knees (Scottish-influenced costumes), and Vekou (ghosts).

What People Do:

On this day, locals and visitors alike rise early to join or watch J'ouvert bands winding through roads to pulsating rhythms. After cleaning off the mud or oil from J'ouvert during daylight hours, some attendees participate in or observe Traditional Mas parades featuring richly decorated costumes.

Throughout towns and villages, there are also numerous parties and "lime" gatherings—Caribbean slang for hanging out—where people enjoy local food, drinks, music, dance, and socializing. The atmosphere is one of joyous abandon as the entire island comes alive with festive spirit.

The first day's events set the stage for more formal parades on Carnival Tuesday when revelers don costumes representing various themes for a colorful spectacle known as Pretty Mas.
