The King’s birthday is an annual public holiday in Australia celebrating the official birthday of King Charles III.

King's Birthday in the United Kingdom

The King's Birthday in the United Kingdom is a celebration of the reigning monarch's birthday. Although the actual date of birth for the monarch may vary, the official celebration is typically marked on a designated day that is observed as a public holiday known as the "King's Official Birthday" or "The Queen's Official Birthday" when the monarch is a queen.

History:

  • The tradition of celebrating the sovereign’s birthday publicly dates back to 1748, during the reign of King George II.
  • Due to his November birthdate often coinciding with cold weather, which wasn't suitable for a public celebration, George II decided to combine his birthday celebration with the annual military parade known as Trooping the Colour, held each summer.

Traditions:

  • Trooping the Colour: This military parade takes place on Horse Guards Parade by St. James’s Park in London and includes over 1,400 officers and men, around 200 horses, and over 400 musicians from ten bands. This display of pageantry showcases military precision, horsemanship, and fanfare.
  • Royal Gun Salutes: Gun salutes are fired from various locations in London and across the UK to mark the occasion.
  • Honours List: The monarch traditionally awards honors to various individuals for their service to the country.

What People Do:

  • Members of the public often gather along The Mall in London to witness Trooping the Colour and catch a glimpse of members of the Royal Family on Buckingham Palace's balcony.
  • Across communities, some people may hold street parties or local celebrations.
  • It is not typically marked as a day off for most workers outside of those directly involved in state functions or ceremonies.

The specific date of this celebration has moved over time with different monarchs but it is currently held on a Saturday in early June. With Queen Elizabeth II having passed away in September 2022 and her son Charles becoming King Charles III, future celebrations will be referred to as "King's Birthday" pending any changes he may make to royal traditions.
