Mothers and mother figures are honored with cards, gifts and other acts of kindness on Mothers’ Day in France.

Mother's Day in France (Fête des Mères)

Date:

  • Mother's Day in France is typically celebrated on the last Sunday of May. However, if Pentecost (Pentecôte) falls on that day, the celebration is moved to the first Sunday in June.

History:

  • The origins of Mother's Day in France can be traced back to the early 20th century.
  • In 1906, the village of Artas claimed to have held the first modern Mother's Day celebration by honoring local mothers with two large medals for having large families, as part of efforts to boost population after losses during the Franco-Prussian War.
  • During World War I, mothers of four or five children were given a medal for their contributions to rebuilding the French population.
  • In 1920, a day for mothers of large families was officially instated as a national holiday by the government.
  • Later, in 1950, an official decree stated that Mother's Day would be celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday in May (or first Sunday in June if it coincides with Pentecost).

Traditions:

  • Gift-Giving: Children often give handmade gifts or purchase presents like jewelry, perfumes, or chocolates for their mothers.
  • Flowers: A common tradition is giving flowers—particularly roses or other seasonal blooms—to honor one's mother.
  • Meal: Families might gather for a special meal either at home or at a restaurant to celebrate together.

Activities:

  • Crafting: Schools and organizations may facilitate crafting sessions where children create cards or small gifts.
  • Commemorative Ceremonies: Some municipalities host ceremonies to honor mothers who have raised large families.
  • Family Gatherings: It's common for extended families to come together and spend quality time with one another.

Mother’s Day in France remains a day dedicated to expressing gratitude and love towards mothers through various gestures ranging from simple acts of kindness and recognition to more elaborate celebrations.
