Labor Day, International Workers' Day, and May Day, is a day off for workers in many countries around the world.

May Day in Finland (Vappu)

History: May Day, known as "Vappu" in Finland, has its origins in ancient spring festivities and later became aligned with International Workers' Day. It was first celebrated by the working class in the late 19th century and has since become a widespread public holiday.

Traditions:

  • Student traditions: Vappu is particularly significant for students. It's common for university students to wear colorful overalls and their white student caps. The celebrations often begin on April 30th, known as "Vappuaatto," with the capping of statues in cities with student caps as a symbolic gesture.
  • Picnics and outdoor gatherings: On May 1st, Finns gather for picnics in parks regardless of the weather. Traditional food includes sima (homemade mead), tippaleipä (funnel cakes), munkki (doughnuts), and rosettes.
  • Balloon sellers and carnivals: Cities are filled with balloons, decorations, and carnival-like atmospheres. Street vendors sell various festive goods.

What people do:

  • Attend parades or organized events.
  • Enjoy food and alcoholic beverages at home parties or public places.
  • Listen to music concerts or watch performances taking place throughout cities.
  • Spend time with family and friends outdoors to welcome the spring season.

In essence, Vappu is a joyful celebration that marks the end of winter, welcoming spring with social gatherings that honor both labor achievements and seasonal change.
