Good Friday is a global Christian observance two days before Easter Sunday.

Good Friday in Finland

History and Significance:

Good Friday, known as "Pitkäperjantai" in Finnish, is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. As part of the Holy Week leading up to Easter Sunday, it holds significant religious importance for Christians in Finland and worldwide. The day is observed during the spring, with its date varying each year according to the lunar calendar.

Traditions:

In Finland, Good Friday has traditionally been a somber day of reflection and church attendance. Many Finns attend special church services where the Passion of Christ is recounted, and hymns reflecting the solemn mood are sung. Religious processions or walks reflecting Jesus's journey to the cross may also be part of local observances.

Historically, it was common for Finns to observe a quiet day with little activity; shops would close, and people would refrain from playing loud music or engaging in festive activities out of respect for the day's grave nature.

Contemporary Observations:

While still a public holiday in Finland, contemporary observances of Good Friday have evolved. Some Finns continue to observe religious traditions by attending church services or participating in quiet reflection at home. However, as society has become more secularized, others may use the day off work to relax or enjoy leisure activities. It is also an opportunity for families to spend time together preparing for Easter Sunday celebrations.

Additionally, state-run institutions like banks and post offices are closed on Good Friday. While some shops may open for limited hours, many businesses remain closed throughout the day.

As part of Easter weekend retail restrictions though relaxed compared to past decades still limit store opening hours on Good Friday with most smaller stores closed while larger supermarkets may have limited opening hours.

Despite changes over time, Good Friday remains an integral part of Finland’s Easter traditions and public holidays calendar.
