Derg Downfall Day, also known as the National Day of Ethiopia or Ginbot 20, is observed annually on May 28th. It commemorates the fall of the Derg regime and the end of the Ethiopian Civil War.
The Derg, a Soviet-backed Marxist-Leninist military junta, overthrew Emperor Haile Selassie in 1974. The regime was led by Mengistu Haile Mariam and was marked by oppressive rule, political repression, and widespread human rights abuses. This period, known as the Red Terror, saw tens of thousands of political opponents killed.
In 1991, after years of conflict and with the help of Eritrean and Tigrean rebel forces, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) successfully toppled the Derg regime. The day marks the EPRDF's capture of Addis Ababa, leading to Mengistu's flight from Ethiopia.
