Santa Faz in Spain
Santa Faz, also known as The Holy Face, is a religious festivity celebrated in Alicante, Spain, particularly centered on the Monastery of Santa Faz. The day marks the veneration of a relic that is believed to be a piece of the cloth with which Veronica wiped the face of Jesus on his way to Calvary.
History:
The relic was reportedly brought to Alicante from the Vatican in the 15th century.
A miracle is said to have occurred in 1489 when a tear appeared on the relic, leading to an increase in its veneration.
Traditions:
A significant tradition is the Santa Faz Pilgrimage, which takes place on the second Thursday after Good Friday.
Thousands of pilgrims walk about 8 kilometers from Alicante's St. Nicholas Cathedral to the monastery.
Participants often dress in traditional clothing and carry walking sticks.
Activities on Santa Faz Day:
Pilgrims attend a special mass at St. Nicholas Cathedral before starting their journey.
Along the way, people often partake in communal meals and share "rollicos de anĂs" (anise rolls) and "mistela" (sweet wine).
Upon reaching the monastery, devotees pray and seek blessings from the relic.
Cultural events including music, dance, and local festivities add to the celebration throughout Alicante.
