The Festival of the Vaquillas is a traditional celebration that takes place in various regions of Spain, notably in Teruel, Aragon. It is part of the larger "Fiestas del Ángel" or "La Vaquilla del Ángel", which usually occur in early July, around the feast day of Saint Michael the Archangel.
The festival has medieval origins and ties back to ceremonial tributes paid to feudal lords. Over time, it evolved into a celebration of patron saints and local culture. Central to the festivities is the act of running with vaquillas (heifers), which is reminiscent of but less dangerous than the famous running of the bulls in Pamplona.
Traditionally, participants dress in distinctive costumes that vary from one locality to another. In Teruel, for example, men wear colorful outfits known as peñistas, whereas women often don traditional Aragonese attire.
