Day of Asturias (Día de Asturias in Spanish, Día d'Asturies in Asturian) is a regional holiday celebrated in the Principality of Asturias, located in the north of Spain. This festivity takes place annually on September 8th.
The date coincides with the feast of the Virgin of Covadonga (Santina de Covadonga), the patron saint of Asturias, and commemorates the Battle of Covadonga. This battle, fought around 722 AD, was significant for being the first Christian victory over the Moors after their conquest of most of Iberian Peninsula. The battle is often considered as the starting point for the Reconquista, which was the centuries-long effort to reclaim Iberian territories from Muslim rule.
On this day, various events and activities are held throughout Asturias to celebrate its history and culture:
Religious Celebrations: There are services and processions in honor of the Virgin of Covadonga at her sanctuary near Cangas de Onís.
Official Ceremonies: Government officials participate in official acts that include laying wreaths and various political representatives giving speeches.
Cultural Events: Musical performances, traditional dances, bagpipe concerts, and exhibitions showcase Asturian folklore.
Sports Competitions: Traditional sports competitions such as "arrastre de piedra" (stone dragging) or "levantamiento de peso" (weightlifting) take place.
Local Festivities: Towns across Asturias hold local fiestas with food stalls offering regional delicacies like fabada (bean stew), cider tasting sessions, and artisan markets.
