Meskel in Eritrea

Meskel is an annual religious holiday in the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church, celebrated with much fervor on September 27th (or September 28th in leap years). This day commemorates the discovery of the True Cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified, as found by Empress Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, in the fourth century.

History

The legend narrates that Empress Helena was guided to the location of the True Cross through a dream. She ordered people to bring wood and make a smoke, and the smoke showed her where the cross was buried. The event is known as "Demera" which means bonfire.

Traditions

Meskel celebrations begin with colorful processions and services. People dress in traditional attire and gather around a large bonfire known as "Demera". Before the bonfire is lit, a procession involving priests, deacons, and Sunday school students occurs; they chant hymns and prayers while circling around the Demera.

The bonfire itself is decorated with daisies and other flowers. The patriarch or a senior priest will light it while prayers are recited. The direction of the falling flames is often interpreted as a prophecy for the coming year.

Activities

On Meskel day:

  • Religious Services: Special church services are held where hymns and prayers related to the cross are recited.
  • Bonfires: Communities gather to light large bonfires in commemoration of Empress Helena's discovery.
  • Family Gatherings: Families come together to share food and drink, often including traditional dishes like injera (flatbread) accompanied by stews.
  • Giving Alms: It's also customary to give money or goods to those less fortunate on this day.

In addition to its religious significance, Meskel serves as an opportunity for social gatherings among friends and family, reinforcing community bonds. It's not only observed in Eritrea but also widely celebrated in Ethiopia with similar customs.
