Ramadan is a period of prayer, reflection and fasting for many Muslims worldwide. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.

Ramadan Start in Egypt

Day: The start of Ramadan in Egypt, as in all Islamic countries, is determined by the sighting of the new moon, which marks the beginning of the lunar month. The exact day varies each year due to the Islamic calendar being lunar-based. Consequently, each year Ramadan starts about 10-12 days earlier than it did the previous year.

History: Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims around the world commemorating when the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad. The history of observing Ramadan goes back to 610 CE and has been an integral part of Islamic tradition since then.

Traditions: In Egypt, traditions during Ramadan are rich and diverse:

  • Fasting: From dawn until sunset, Egyptians abstain from food, drink, smoking, and marital relations. This practice is meant to teach self-discipline and empathy for the less fortunate.
  • Suhur and Iftar: Meals are limited to two: Suhur before dawn and Iftar after sunset. Iftar often starts with dates and milk followed by a rich variety of foods.
  • Taraweeh prayers: Special nightly prayers called Taraweeh are held in mosques where long portions of the Quran are recited.
  • Lanterns (Fanous): A notable tradition is hanging colorful lanterns (fanous), which have become a symbol of Ramadan in Egypt.

What People Do: On the first day of Ramadan:

  • Egyptians begin their day with an intention (niyyah) to fast.
  • They wake up early for Suhur, the pre-dawn meal.
  • Many listen to or watch the official announcement of moon-sighting which officially marks the beginning of Ramadan.
  • After sunset, families gather for Iftar to break their fast together. It's often a social event with extended family members.

Throughout Egypt, people engage in increased spiritual activities such as reading the Quran and attending mosques more frequently during this time. Charitable activities also increase during Ramadan as a way to share blessings with those in need.
