Ramadan is a period of prayer, reflection and fasting for many Muslims worldwide. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.

Ramadan Start in Algeria

In Algeria, like in other Muslim-majority countries, the beginning of Ramadan is determined by the lunar Islamic calendar. The start of Ramadan fluctuates each year, moving approximately 10-12 days earlier annually.

Historical Context

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims worldwide, commemorating the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad according to Islamic belief. This month-long period of fasting from dawn until sunset was established as a fundamental practice for Muslims during Muhammad's life and has been observed by billions of followers since.

Traditions and Practices

On the day that marks the beginning of Ramadan, Algerians, who are predominantly Sunni Muslims, follow traditional practices:

  • Moon Sighting: Religious authorities in Algeria announce the start of Ramadan after confirming the sighting of the new crescent moon or completing 30 days of Sha'ban (the month preceding Ramadan).

  • Fasting (Sawm): From sunrise (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib), Algerians engage in fasting. This includes abstaining from eating, drinking, smoking, and marital relations.

  • Suhoor: Before dawn breaks, families wake up to have Suhoor, a pre-fasting meal which is vital to gain energy for the day ahead.

  • Iftar: At sunset, families and communities come together to break their fast with Iftar which often starts with eating dates and drinking water or milk before moving on to richer foods.

  • Taraweeh Prayers: After Iftar, people attend special nightly prayers called Taraweeh at local mosques which involve reading sections of the Quran each night so that by the end of Ramadan, they have recited the entire holy book.

  • Charity (Zakat): During this time there's an increased emphasis on charity and community support. Many Algerians give Zakat (a form of almsgiving) and provide food for those in need.

Social Aspect

The start of Ramadan is also a time when social bonds are strengthened. Family members gather for meals and prayers; it's a time marked by a sense of belonging and communal spirituality. Traditional sweets like Zlabia and Bourek are prepared in homes and neighborhoods buzz with festive preparations.

Ramadan’s start is not only a period devoted to worship but also an opportunity for self-reflection and community engagement in Algerian society.
