Liberation Day in Denmark
Date: May 4th
History
Liberation Day commemorates the end of Nazi Germany's occupation of Denmark during World War II. The occupation began on April 9, 1940, and continued until May 5, 1945. Danish resistance movements, along with Allied forces, played a significant role in the liberation efforts. The day before liberation was officially announced, on the evening of May 4th, Danish people heard the news of their freedom through British radio.
Traditions
Candlelight: A central tradition on this day is the lighting of candles in windows at dusk. This custom dates back to the actual night of liberation when Danes lit candles to celebrate their freedom and to welcome the British liberators.
Commemorative Events: Across Denmark, various events are held to honor war veterans and remember those who lost their lives during the occupation.
Flag Flying: The Danish flag, known as the Dannebrog, is flown at half-mast as a sign of remembrance until sunset and then raised to full mast as an expression of liberation.
Activities
Speeches and Concerts: Public figures often make speeches, and concerts may be held to celebrate freedom and democracy.
Educational Events: Schools and museums may hold special exhibitions or lessons focusing on World War II history and Denmark's role in it.
Community Gatherings: In towns and cities, community gatherings or church services may take place to reflect on themes of liberty and peace.
