Background: Labor Day, known as International Workers' Day or May Day, is a public holiday in Denmark. It has its origins in the international labor movement and commemorates the fight for an eight-hour workday and other workers' rights.
History: The day was first marked by the Danish labor movement in 1890, following a decision at the Second International, an organization of socialist and labor parties, to honor the Haymarket affair which took place in Chicago in 1886. The Chicago protest was part of a larger campaign for an eight-hour workday.
Traditions: May Day is traditionally associated with worker's solidarity and political demonstrations. Unions and political groups, mainly from the left-wing spectrum such as Social Democrats, Socialists, and Communists, organize rallies and marches where leaders give speeches to advocate for workers' rights and social justice issues.
What People Do: Many Danes participate in or observe the demonstrations; others enjoy the day off as it coincides with springtime by relaxing or engaging in outdoor activities. While some use it as an opportunity to express their political views or support for workers’ issues, others treat it as a chance to spend time with friends and family.
