Great Prayer Day in Denmark

Great Prayer Day (Store Bededag in Danish) is a national holiday observed in Denmark traditionally falling on the fourth Friday after Easter Sunday. The day is unique to Denmark and has been celebrated since the late 17th century.

History:

The holiday was introduced in 1686 by King Christian V as a consolidation of several minor or local fast and prayer days into one single day. The idea was proposed by the bishop of Zealand, Hans Bagger, with an aim to bring more efficiency to the observance of these days. The first Great Prayer Day was held on April 13, 1687.

Traditions:

One of the longstanding traditions associated with Great Prayer Day is the preparation and consumption of hveder, which are large wheat buns that people traditionally eat on the evening before Great Prayer Day, known as hvedeaften. These buns are often toasted and buttered.

The night before Great Prayer Day, church bells across the country ring out in a special manner called "Klokkeklang" to remind people to attend services and pray.

Current Observances:

On Great Prayer Day itself, Danes attend church services where special prayers are made. It's a day of reflection and quietude for many.

Following religious services, it's common for people to enjoy outdoor activities if weather permits, as spring is well underway by this time. Parks and public spaces may be filled with families and friends enjoying picnics or going for walks.

As with many holidays, modern observance varies widely among individuals, with some attending church diligently while others may use the day simply as a peaceful break from work to enjoy Denmark's springtime beauty.
