After being a French territory for about a century, the push for independence began to gain momentum following World War II with the decolonization movement sweeping across Africa. In 1958, the territory voted to remain under French rule but with more autonomy. However, by the 1970s, calls for complete independence could not be ignored. Finally, after negotiations and a referendum, Djibouti declared its independence on June 27, 1977.
