Saint Nicholas Day in Germany

Date: December 6th

History and Traditions:

Saint Nicholas Day, known as Nikolaustag in Germany, is a festive occasion honoring Saint Nicholas of Myra, a 4th-century saint renowned for his generosity and for being the precursor to the modern figure of Santa Claus. German traditions for this day stem from legends of St. Nicholas's good deeds, particularly his secret giving of gifts.

Observance:

On the eve of December 6th, children clean and polish their boots, placing them outside their door or by their window before bedtime. According to tradition, St. Nicholas travels during the night.

  • Good Children: They wake up to find their boots filled with treats such as nuts, fruits, chocolates, and small gifts.
  • Naughty Children: A branch or a piece of coal might be left as a gentle reprimand.

In some regions, children may also receive a visit from Nikolaus dressed in bishop's robes accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht, a figure who admonishes those who have behaved poorly.

Festivities:

Saint Nicholas Day activities may include:

  • Attending special church services
  • Participating in parades and local events
  • Enjoying traditional foods like Lebkuchen (gingerbread)

The day is celebrated at home, in schools and kindergartens with much excitement among children who eagerly anticipate St. Nicholas’s rewards for good behavior throughout the year.
