Day: November 9, 1989
History: The Berlin Wall, which had come to symbolize the Cold War division between East and West Germany, was erected in 1961 by the communist government of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) to prevent its citizens from fleeing to West Germany. Standing for over 28 years, it was a physical barrier dividing families, friends, and a nation.
In the late 1980s, under Mikhail Gorbachev's policies of Glasnost (openness) and Perestroika (restructuring), political change swept across Eastern Europe. East German citizens began to demand greater freedom, culminating in mass protests.
The Day: On November 9th, East German authorities announced that all GDR citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin. Crowds of Germans from both sides gathered at the wall and began to climb over and dismantle it piece by pieceāa moment that became a powerful symbol of the end of the Cold War.
Traditions and Commemorations:
People celebrate this day as a momentous event in German history that represents peace, unity, and hope for a world without divisions.
