European Heritage Days (EHD), known in Germany as "Tag des offenen Denkmals" (Heritage Open Day), is part of a joint action by the Council of Europe and the European Commission. The initiative began in 1985 with France's "Journées Portes Ouvertes aux Monuments Historiques" and has since spread across Europe. Germany joined the action in 1991, and since then, the event has been coordinated by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Monument Protection).
European Heritage Days are celebrated annually in September. On this day, historical buildings, archaeological sites, and other cultural heritage that are usually closed to the public open their doors free of charge. This includes private residences, government buildings, churches, industrial sites, parks, and gardens.
On European Heritage Days:
The event aims to foster understanding of Europe’s common heritage and encourage citizens to take an active role in protecting their cultural environment. Each year a different theme is chosen to highlight specific aspects of heritage preservation.
