The March Revolution in Germany, also known as the German Revolution of 1848–49, was a series of events that took place primarily in the German states within the Confederation. It was part of the wider Revolutions of 1848 that swept across Europe. The revolutionaries pressed for liberal reforms and a unified Germany, which at that time was divided into numerous semi-autonomous states.
The uprising began in March 1848, triggered by a series of political and economic issues, including discontent with authoritarian rule, a demand for civil liberties, and the influence of similar revolutionary activities in France. Although initially successful with some concessions made by authorities, such as press freedom and the promise of a national parliament, the revolution ultimately failed to achieve its main goals.
The memory of the March Revolution is more subdued than other historical events in German history. It is often overshadowed by later unification efforts and lacks widespread formal recognition or celebration.
