The March Equinox, also known as the Spring Equinox, is significant in Czechia as it marks the beginning of astronomical spring. This event typically occurs around March 21st when the day and night are approximately equal in length.
Historically, the equinox was celebrated by various cultures and holds a strong place in Slavic traditions. In Czechia, ancient pagan customs were intertwined with Christian practices over time.
One of the main traditions associated with this period is the burning of Morena (Marzanna), which symbolizes the end of winter and cold weather. Morena is a straw effigy that represents winter, death, and old age. The effigy is traditionally paraded and then burned or drowned in a river or pond.
Easter, which often falls close to the equinox, plays a significant role during this time with various customs such as painting Easter eggs or "kraslice," making whips from willow branches called "pomlázka," and baking special pastries like "mazanec" or "beránek."
On the day of the equinox itself, Czechs may not necessarily engage in specific activities solely due to its occurrence. However, it is appreciated as a turning point towards warmer days.
The March Equinox is not a public holiday in Czechia; hence regular daily activities continue as on any other day.
