Easter Monday in Czechia

History and Traditions: Easter Monday is a significant cultural and religious occasion in Czechia, deeply rooted in Christian traditions marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Over time, it has evolved to incorporate various folk customs and practices.

One of the most notable traditions on Easter Monday is the "pomlázka." This involves boys and men weaving whips from willow branches and playfully spanking girls and women to wish them health and vitality for the coming year. It's said that the willow is the first tree to bloom in spring, so its branches are believed to bring strength and youth to those who are whipped with them.

In return for this gesture, girls and women reward the boys with painted eggs or small gifts. The eggs, often beautifully decorated, are known as "kraslice" and are a symbol of new life.

Modern Celebrations: Today, Easter Monday festivities in Czechia blend traditional customs with modern celebrations. Families gather for festive meals, which may include special dishes such as lamb, ham, and a sweet bread called "mazanec."

Public events such as fairs, parades, egg exhibitions, or folk music performances also occur throughout towns and villages. The day is an official public holiday in Czechia so many people enjoy a day off work to spend with family or partake in outdoor activities if weather permits.

While some of the old traditions like pomlázka are observed more lightheartedly nowadays, they remain an important part of Easter Monday's charm in Czech culture.
