Christmas Day in Czechia (Czech Republic)
Date:
December 25th
History and Origin:
Christmas Day, known as "Boží hod vánoční" in Czech, has Christian origins celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. However, many traditions also have pre-Christian roots in pagan winter solstice festivities.
Traditions:
Advent: The festive period begins with Advent, leading up to Christmas Eve, which is the main day of celebration.
Christmas Eve (Štědrý den): Traditionally more significant than December 25th. Families gather for a dinner often including carp and potato salad.
Ježíšek (Baby Jesus): Unlike many Western countries where Santa Claus delivers gifts, in Czechia, it is Baby Jesus who brings presents to children.
Christmas Decorations: Homes are decorated with nativity scenes, Christmas trees adorned with ornaments, and lights.
Midnight Mass: Many attend a church service on Christmas Eve.
Activities on Christmas Day:
Family Time: Families spend time together at home enjoying each other's company and indulging in traditional food.
Feasting: A continuation of the festive feasting from Christmas Eve. Leftovers like fish soup and other traditional dishes are common.
Outdoor Activities: Depending on the weather, some may go for a walk or engage in winter sports.
Relaxation: After the excitement of Christmas Eve, the day is often used to relax and play with new gifts.
Note: While Christmas Day is a public holiday and a day off for most people, it is not as eventful as Christmas Eve (Štědrý den), which holds the primary place in Czech holiday traditions.
