Cyprus Independence Day is celebrated on October 1st each year, marking the island nation's formal independence from British colonial rule. The history of this day dates back to the 1950s and early 1960s, when a national liberation struggle was led by the National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters (EOKA) against British colonization.
The push for independence culminated in the Zurich and London Agreements, leading to the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus on August 16, 1960. However, it wasn't until October 1st that Cyprus became fully independent after a transition period of self-governance under British administration. This day was chosen as Independence Day to commemorate the start of EOKA's armed campaign on April 1st, 1955.
Traditions and Celebrations:
On this day, Cypriots reflect on their history of colonialism and struggle for self-determination while celebrating their sovereignty and national identity.
