This day commemorates the life and legacy of Amílcar Cabral, a prominent agronomist, writer, and political leader who played a significant role in the fight for independence of Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau) and Cape Verde.
History: Amílcar Cabral was born on September 12, 1924, and became the founder of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC). He led the nationalist movement against Portuguese colonial rule, which eventually led to the independence of both nations. Unfortunately, his life was cut short when he was assassinated on January 20, 1973, before he could witness the fruition of his efforts.
