Liberation Day, also known as Triumph of the Revolution (Triunfo de la RevoluciĆ³n), is a national holiday in Cuba celebrated on January 1st each year. This day marks the anniversary of the victory of the Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro in 1959.
The Cuban Revolution began on July 26, 1953, with an assault on the Moncada Barracks. Although this initial uprising was unsuccessful, it sparked a movement against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. After years of guerrilla warfare in the Sierra Maestra mountains, Batista fled the country on December 31, 1958. The following day, January 1, 1959, marked the official triumph of Fidel Castro's revolutionary forces and a significant turning point in Cuban history.
