Epiphany, also known as the Three Kings' Day or El Día de los Reyes, is celebrated on January 6th in Cuba, as in many other parts of the world. This Christian feast day is significant for commemorating the visit of the three wise men — Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar — to the baby Jesus after his birth. This day marks the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ.
In Cuba, Epiphany used to be an important holiday before the revolution. After 1959, its celebration was suppressed by the government due to its religious nature. However, since the relaxation of religious restrictions in the 1990s, Cubans have begun to revive some of their traditional celebrations discreetly.
Traditionally, Cuban children would await Los Reyes Magos much like other children anticipate Santa Claus. They would leave their shoes out on January 5th with a list of gifts they desired, hoping that the kings would leave presents by morning.
Currently, while Epiphany may not be celebrated as widely or openly as it once was due to decades of secularism post-revolution, it still holds a place among religious communities and families who maintain their traditions.
The celebration of Epiphany varies greatly from one Cuban household to another; while some continue to embrace these traditions fully, others may not observe the day at all. Nevertheless, for those who celebrate it, Epiphany is a time of joy and reflection on an important aspect of their faith.
