Colombia's Independence Day marks the country's liberation from Spanish rule. It commemorates the events of July 20, 1810, when residents of Bogotá, inspired by earlier uprisings in other Spanish colonies, initiated a movement to demand independence. The historical episode known as the "Flower Vase Incident" (El Florero de Llorente) acted as a catalyst when an altercation broke out after a request for a flower vase was denied. This confrontation escalated into a widespread call for autonomy, setting off the struggle that eventually led to independence.
Independence Day in Colombia is celebrated with patriotic zeal. The national flag is hoisted across public and private buildings, and many places are adorned with the national colors: yellow, blue, and red.
On this public holiday, Colombians participate in various activities:
Colombians living abroad also celebrate by attending cultural events that connect them with their heritage.
