Epiphany is a Christian holiday celebrated globally on January 6 each year. It commemorates two events recorded in the Bible: the three wise men’s visit to baby Jesus; and Jesus’ baptism.

Epiphany in Colombia

Epiphany, also known as Three Kings' Day or Día de los Reyes Magos, is celebrated in Colombia on January 6th. This Christian feast day commemorates the biblical visit of the three wise men—Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar—to the infant Jesus Christ. It marks the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ and concludes the Christmas festivities.

History and Tradition:

  • The celebration has its roots in Christian traditions, where it has been observed since the 4th century.
  • In Colombia, as in many Latin American countries, Epiphany is associated with cultural practices that blend indigenous, African, and Spanish influences.

Celebrations:

  • Nativity Scenes: Many Colombian families display nativity scenes until Epiphany, which is when they add figurines of the Three Kings to complete the scene.
  • Gift-Giving: Traditionally, children receive gifts on this day, which are said to be brought by the Three Kings. It reflects the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh given to Jesus by the magi.

Customs:

  • Rosca de Reyes: A special cake or bread called 'Rosca de Reyes' (King's Ring) is often baked with a small figurine hidden inside. Whoever finds it may have to host a party or fulfill a specific role or duty.
  • Parades and Festivities: Parades known as 'Cabalgatas' are common in various cities where people dress up as kings or biblical characters.

On this day, families often come together for meals and celebrations. While modern practices may focus on gift-giving similar to Christmas Day in other parts of the world, traditional religious observances also remain an important aspect of Epiphany in Colombia.
