Special Working Day in China is an occasional workday that falls on a weekend. The practice began in 1999 when China's State Council introduced the Golden Week system to boost domestic tourism and allow people to make long-distance family visits. The idea was to create longer contiguous holiday periods by swapping certain weekend days with weekdays adjoining mandatory holidays.
On a Special Working Day, businesses and government offices are open as usual, and employees report to work despite it being a weekend. These days typically precede or follow a national holiday period, allowing for an extended break at a later date. There are no specific traditions associated with Special Working Days themselves; they are viewed as makeup workdays required to justify the longer holidays.
These working arrangements are announced each year by the government before major public holidays, enabling citizens to plan their vacations and travel ahead of time.
