Double Ninth Festival in China

Date:

The Double Ninth Festival, also known as Chongyang Festival, is celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month.

History:

The festival has origins dating back to the Warring States period (475-221 BC). It is associated with numerous legends and is thought to have started as a day to ward off danger and evil spirits due to the number nine being considered yang and auspicious, which contrasts with the yin number six.

Traditions:

  • Climbing Heights: To avoid disasters, people participate in hiking or mountain climbing. This is based on a tale of a man who avoided calamity by going to high ground.
  • Enjoying Autumn Scenery: As it occurs in autumn, appreciating the autumn colors and chrysanthemums is a common activity.
  • Chrysanthemum Wine: Drinking this wine made from chrysanthemums is said to promote health and longevity.
  • Wearing Cornus: In ancient times, people would wear cornus, a plant believed to drive away evil spirits.
  • Eating Double Ninth Cake: Known as "Chongyang cake," this food item is symbolic and often bears resemblance to climbing or ascension.

Activities:

On this day, families will often gather for reunions. Celebrated across China in different ways depending on the region, activities can include flying kites and other local customs that celebrate elderly people's wisdom and longevity. The festival has also been designated as Senior Citizens' Day in China, emphasizing respect for the elderly.
