History: National Day in Cameroon, also known as Unity Day, commemorates the national reunification that occurred in 1972. Originally, the country was divided into French and British-ruled territories. After gaining independence from France on January 1, 1960, and following a plebiscite on February 11, 1961, the formerly British Southern Cameroons united with the Republic of Cameroon to form the Federal Republic of Cameroon. The unitary state of the United Republic of Cameroon was later established on May 20, 1972, after a national referendum abolished the federal system in favor of a unitary state. This day marks the birth of a single Cameroonian nation-state.
