Navy Day in Chile

Navy Day in Chile, known as "Día de las Glorias Navales," is celebrated annually on May 21. This day commemorates the Battle of Iquique which took place on May 21, 1879, during the War of the Pacific, where Chile fought against Peru and Bolivia.

History

The battle was a key moment in Chilean naval history where the Chilean corvette Esmeralda, commanded by Captain Arturo Prat, engaged with the Peruvian ironclad Huáscar. Despite being outgunned and eventually sunk, the valor shown by Prat and his crew became a symbol of sacrifice and courage for Chile. Prat himself became a national hero after he led a boarding party onto Huáscar and was killed in action.

Traditions

  • Wreath-Laying Ceremony: A central event is the wreath-laying ceremony at monuments dedicated to Arturo Prat throughout the country.
  • Parades & Military Displays: In coastal cities, especially Valparaíso (the principal naval base), military parades and displays take place involving navy personnel.
  • Speeches & Commemorations: Authorities give speeches highlighting the bravery of those who fought at Iquique. The President of Chile often attends these events.
  • Visiting Naval Vessels: The public may be invited to tour naval ships that are docked for public viewing.
  • Cultural Activities: Schools across Chile hold activities such as plays and poetry recital commemorating the battle and its heroes.

What People Do

On this day, many people across Chile participate in civic ceremonies and educational activities that honor their naval heritage. Family members of navy personnel often attend special functions dedicated to their loved ones' service. National pride is evident as citizens reflect on a pivotal event in their nation's history.
