National Day of Indigenous Peoples in Chile, known as "Día Nacional de los Pueblos Indígenas", is a public holiday celebrated on June 24th. This date coincides with the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere, which is a significant astronomical event for many indigenous cultures.
The day was established to acknowledge and honor the rich cultural heritage and contributions of indigenous peoples to Chilean society. It recognizes various groups including the Mapuche, Aymara, Rapa Nui, Quechua, Atacameño, Diaguita, Kawésqar, and Yagan among others. The holiday was officially instituted in 2021 after a bill was approved by the Chilean Congress, replacing the previous religious holiday Corpus Christi.
Traditionally, indigenous communities have celebrated the winter solstice with ceremonies that are linked to the cycles of nature and agriculture. These ceremonies often involve rituals that express gratitude to the earth for past harvests and hopes for future bounty.
