The most significant event remembered on this day is the killing of numerous people during protests on January 4, 1959, which accelerated the country's quest for independence.
The protests were sparked by an incident at a football match in Kinshasa (formerly LĂ©opoldville), which led to widespread demonstrations against colonial authorities. The violent suppression of these demonstrations by the Belgian police and military resulted in many deaths and drew international attention to the cause of Congolese independence. This ultimately contributed to Belgium granting independence to Congo on June 30, 1960.
