Louis Riel Day is a statutory holiday celebrated in the Canadian province of Manitoba on the third Monday in February. It coincides with Family Day in other provinces.
The day is named after Louis Riel, a Métis leader who fought for the rights and culture of the Métis people and played a significant role in Manitoba's entry into Confederation. He was also central to the Red River and North-West resistances. The holiday was officially established in 2007 following a Manitoba school competition to name the day.
