National Heroes and Benefactors Day, formerly known as Baron Bliss Day, is a public holiday in Belize observed on March 9th. This day commemorates the contributions of Belize's national heroes, including Baron Bliss—one of the country's most significant benefactors.
Baron Bliss, born Henry Edward Ernest Victor Bliss, was a British-born traveler who willed a substantial part of his fortune to Belize upon his death on March 9, 1926. Although he never set foot on mainland Belize, he spent time on his yacht near the harbor and grew fond of the people and their way of life. In honor of his generosity, Belize originally dedicated this day to him.
As time passed, the holiday evolved to recognize not only Baron Bliss but also other key figures who have played essential roles in shaping the nation's history.
